CORRUGATED METAL ROOF INSTALLATION

Corrugated metal roofing is a type of steel roof made of wavy cold-bent steel sheet profiles. Corrugated roofing sheets in Windsor, ON are typically made of galvanized steel with a polymer coating, but they can also be made of aluminium or stainless steel. Corrugated metal roofing is known for having exposed fasteners, which is both a strength and weakness of the system. On the plus side, exposed screws makes for a quick, simple, and low-cost installation.

Each sheet requires approximately 20 screws to be properly secure. A downside to corrugated metal is that the screw holes reduce the roof's water resistance and make the covering susceptible to leakage. Corrugated roofing is often found in agricultural and construction areas such as on industrial buildings, barns, and commercial and engineered structures.

CORRUGATED ROOF PANELS

Corrugated metal roof panels have a wavy appearance with "S'' shaped curves. They start off as large round coils of steel and are roll-formed in a machine to get their wavy appearance. The two most common types of corrugated metal roofing are ⅞” Corrugated and ½” Corrugated.

⅞” Corrugated Metal Roofing

⅞” corrugated metal roofing is the most common wavy corrugated roofing panel. It gets its name from the rib height of the panel, which is 7/8" inch. The deep round corrugations create a visually appealing and durable panel. ⅞” panels are wider and less expensive than ½” Corrugated metal roofing.

Why consider ⅞” corrugated roofing?

  • Far less expensive that ½” corrugated
  • Strong and durable roofing panel
  • Wide and distinct appearance
  • Quicker installation

½” Corrugated Metal Roofing

½” Corrugated is a traditional and classic metal roofing panel. It is now used less frequently on construction projects because it's expensive, has less strength and durability than ⅞” panels, fewer colour and gauge options, and takes longer to install.

Why consider ½” corrugated roofing?

  • Can use to patch your existing ½” corrugated roof
  • You prefer the look of smaller waves
  • You need a lower profile panel due to clearance requirements

WHEN YOU SHOULD USE CORRUGATED METAL ROOFING

Working on a small budget. Corrugated roofing is the most affordable metal roof available on the market. It's great for home or business owners who want to benefit from a steel roof but can’t afford standing seam.

When doing DIY installation. When compared to metal shingle roofs or standing seam roofs, corrugated roofing is very easy to install. Homeowners can install corrugated panels themselves and save money.

Great for agricultural and commercial buildings. Since corrugated roofing has exposed fasteners, it's not particularly great for residential homes. This, however, makes it an excellent metal roof for agricultural and commercial structures. It is inexpensive and quick to install.

On a tight schedule. If you are on a tight deadline, corrugated roofing panels are readily available at most home improvement stores. They can be ordered and installed in a short amount of time.

WHEN YOU SHOULDN'T USE CORRUGATED METAL ROOFING

You want a concealed fastener roof. Corrugated roofing uses exposed fasteners which requires more maintenance than concealed fasteners. The screws are also visible from the outside and can rust and shift overtime.

You live in a climate with extreme weather conditions. Corrugated metal is often thinner and has a difficult time withstanding Windsor's harsh Canadian climate. Plus, the exposed fasteners can create opportunities for leaks which can result in expensive water repairs.

You want a modern metal roof design. While corrugated metal roof panels are wavy, they don’t fit into the clean line aesthetic of a contemporary home. Other metal roofing options like standing seam, provides a sleek, modern design for residential homes.
